When Bryce left for the evening and said what a nice time he had, I hoped he was just being polite and could see as clearly as I did that we were a bad match.

Hanita turned to me with a hesitant smile. "Well?”

"He was lovely, Hanita, and nice to look at. Shame he was so boring.”

"He wasn't that boring.”

"I saw you shooting daggers at me when I asked him another question about his neighbour's rampant bindweed problem.”

"And you just had to say that if you had a neglectful neighbour like that it would really wind you up.”

"Oh come on, it was funny. You laughed. He just carried on talking, though.”

"You're right. He was a dud. Jasper, what do you have to say for yourself?”

"Nothing. I was asked to find someone who met three selection criteria. I fulfilled my obligations.”

Hanita turned back to me and shrugged. "Right, there's only one option left. We're going to have to pull out the big guns. You'll have to get a rabbit.”

Jasper looked puzzled. "I'm not sure a pet is going to satisfactorily fill the hole Nance has in her life for the love of a good man.”

"Oh, this is a very special pet, my love. I have no doubt that Nance's love hole will be filled to the satisfaction level of stratospheric. What are you doing tomorrow morning?” she asked me. "I'm taking you shopping.”
