The French have a generous helping of days off. With luck, these fall on Tuesdays or Thursdays, which enables the French to take Monday or Friday off as well, and thereby create a long weekend – a practice known as faire le pont (‘to make the bridge’), but it might just as well be known as faire le point.

Like the Scots, the French often spend more time, money and effort celebrating the New Year than Christmas. In their religious festivals, they adopt a position halfway between the Spanish and Italian fervour in sun-scorched town squares, and the semi-apologetic gatherings of the English on rain-swept village greens. They are mindful of the religious background of such occasions, but what they most enjoy is the food and drink at the end of the day and the old songs sung at the long wooden tables.

“A kermesse is a boozy fête at which you could win a duck ‘sufficient at the table for eight persons’, but still alarmingly alive.”
