The family today
During communism there were no private businesses in the country, and instead of building financial security many people built homes and families as a method of inner escape. Thus, despite an increasing number of singles and co-habitees in society, most Czechs still live in a nuclear family with the man at the head of it, or so he pretends in public.
“Most Czechs still live in a nuclear family with the man at the head of it, or so he pretends.”
Before communism the man would go to work to earn money and the wife would stay at home and take care of the family and home. During communism almost all women were made to work and men would still expect them to take care of the family and home. These days the woman works by choice, and the man comes home, tells his wife that there is no beer in the fridge, asks her “What are we having for dinner?” and then goes to watch TV.
The privatisation that took place at the end of communism was a male dominated privatisation and men had it all their own way. Men make on average about 30% more money than women even when working in the same job and position. They are also in the majority in government and parliament.
Discrimination against women is well documented in Czech legend. In the story of Queen Libuše, the men complain that they don’t want to have a woman as head of the country anymore. When the Queen asks why, she is told that ‘Women’s hair may be long, but their brains are short’, and they know what they are talking about because they are ‘already ruled by them – at home’.
