Drinking is mostly focused around food. However, it may begin about two hours before eating and continue until two hours after it. Apéritifs are popular. These may include a glass of port, or one of the restaurant’s ‘house apéritifs’ (often a fearsome brew of startlingly lurid colour), or some thick medicinal-tasting liquid made of extract of artichoke and orange (thought to be good for stimulating the appetite). Belgians also drink wine – French wine – in prodigious quantities, but the undisputed national drink is beer.
