When Honeysuckle pulled that yellow dress over her head, she looked pretty as Mama did the day she married Daddy George, which is what led to all the trouble.

According to the way Honeysuckle tells the story, they got to the dance and she was standing off to one side waiting for Willie to fetch some sweet tea when Judd walked over and grabbed hold of her arm.

“Look at you all gussied up,” he said. “Since your mama stole what should’ve been mine, I guess she got plenty of money.”

Honeysuckle claimed she didn’t know nothing about that, turned up her nose, and looked the other way. At least that’s how she tells it. Me, I know Honeysuckle better, and I’m thinking she most likely shot her mouth off and gave Judd an earful.

“Just like your Mama, ain’t you?” Judd said. “I got money coming, and ’til your mama pays what she owes I think I’ll settle up with a piece of you.”

According to Honeysuckle, when Judd saw Willie coming toward them, he leaned in real close and whispered something, but she couldn’t say what it was.
