As the days passed and our trip to the cabin at Ein Karem approached, I increasingly felt how badly I needed this vacation. He made me so enthused for our getaway, as if something big was about to await us there. Whenever Aiden thought I was nervous or tired, he would count the days until our vacation. âHold on tight,â he would say and mark with his fingers, âthree more days.â
On the morning of our trip, as I was packing, he was making sure I had packed enough books for us.
âI donât want us watching TV there,â he announced.
âI also hate when the TV keeps us apartâ I agreed.
âRight,â he said, âif we watch TV, weâll forget spending time together. I actually think we should stop watching TV at home on Saturdays.â
I froze, âWhy?â I asked.
âJust because, so that we spend time together as a family,â he said and went on with an accusing tone, âso that once a week the boys wonât stare at the TV,â as if it was me who made them stare at it on Saturdays.
âWe can choose any other day as TV-free. Why Saturday?â I asked sheepishly. I was annoyed that he had brought the subject up, as if it were something casual, also under the pretense of spending more time with the kids. He wasnât willing to admit, perhaps not even to himself, that he was trying to make us all religious.
âWhy are you being coy?â he said impatiently, âWeâre Jewish. So, if we decide to have a TV-free day, it had better be Saturday.â I sighed. I was too tired to have this argument just seconds before we went on our trip. We had all weekend to talk about it, he was also getting on my nerves, just hanging around while I was busy packing. If I donât concentrate, I might forget packing something important. Last time I forgot packing our toothbrushes, he didnât help me in feeling any less guilty, âHow could you forget toothbrushes?â he accused me back then, âThatâs quintessential packing. That and underwear.â
âMaybe you should let me keep on packing quietly,â I asked. âIâll forget to pack something important.â
âWhatâs there to pack,â he said, âweâre going for two days, not a week. And donât take hours with that, I donât want us to get stuck in traffic.â
I sighed in disapproval so that heâll take the hint and leave our bedroom.
