The company introduced the concept of “take out” food with its slogan, “Less work for mother.” Although it closed its doors in 1991, the building still remains on 104th and Broadway. This single painted sign is all that remains of the names Horn & Hardart. However, the Smithsonian Institution has preserved some of the original equipment.

By 1914, New York saw the creation of “penny” restaurants, where a patron could get a meal for a penny or five cents, and if one moved up the economic ladder, there were fifteen-cent establishments that provided hot meat and potatoes, bread, butter, and pickles. For quick meals, there were sausages in toasted buns called “red hots,” which later became known as “hot dogs.”
