Chapter 34

Awkward!

Jessica Lin

The shuttle is small and cramped, and our crew seems to engineer things so that Brad and I are sitting together. I think they’re all a little confused as to why we’ve been so awkward toward each other the last couple of days. None of them were close enough to hear his little comment—proposal?—on the bridge. And unless Tina told them all what she heard in the wardroom, which she possibly did, they don’t know about that, either.

The problem is, I really do love Brad. And I can’t imagine life without him right now…or ever, really. But I’m still wrapping my head around what that means. We haven’t exactly had a lot of downtime to explore our feelings. Since we met, someone always seems to be shooting at us.

“You ready for whatever we find down there?” he whispers next to me.

I nod, even though I have no idea. Uvalde still won’t tell us what to expect, so we really don’t even know what we need to be ready for. And while I suppose I could use the root access to her implant to see any intel she has stored there, even considering it makes me feel a little dirty. Despite my demand for the access, I’m really hoping I won’t have to use it; it just seems like such a gigantic invasion of privacy, even though Uvalde is still a traitor.

Brad sighs. “Listen, Jess, can we just go back to the way things were? Can we forget I ever said what I said and just go back to being happy together?”

I consider this for a few long moments, and from the way he’s squirming in his seat, I can tell the wait is killing him. Finally, I reach out and put my hand on his, grabbing and holding it tightly. “Yes, I’d like that,” I whisper back, and I can almost see the physical sense of relief wash over him.

Unfortunately, I feel no such relief myself. Because I know I’m lying. Things can never go back to how they were.
