Chapter 26 - A Weird Shopping Duo

Jessica Lin

It’s too dangerous for us to go back to the hotel and get our stuff. But when Brad and I wake up a few hours after sunrise, and Gentry finally reveals the location where we’ll find Jimenez tonight, it’s clear we can’t show up there in the same rumpled and torn clothing we’re wearing. Besides, Brad still looks ridiculous in Harris’ bright yellow shirt.

So, we decide that Harris and Uvalde will take the rental van and go on a little shopping trip. Before they leave, I hand Hayley one of the pistols Gentry brought for me and Brad.

“Anything happens,” I tell her, “shoot first and ask questions later. And don’t let Harris get killed.”

She grins at me in her customary way. I would actually send her alone, but given what she wears regularly, I’m almost certain I wouldn’t want to wear anything she picked out. Plus, Harris needs to replenish his supply of cosmetics, or we’ll all look like we just spent the night in a condemned apartment with no electricity or warm water.

“Sure, boss,” she says cheerfully. “And don’t worry, the hombrecito extraño will be safe with me.”

“Just remember,” I tell her anyway, “you have our only car, so you’ll be on your own if there’s any trouble. I really should send Quinn with you.”

“Nah, boss,” she replies, shaking her head emphatically. “He sticks out too much. Better it be just me and Harris.”

Nothing left to say, the two turn to go. “Harris,” I hear her say after they leave through the apartment door, “We need to look like we’re together, sabes? Put your hand in my back pocket and look like you’re happy to have it there, chico. I promise I won’t tell Illy.”

I sigh and shake my head. Poor, introverted Harris is likely to get PTSD from this little shopping trip.

That done, I turn back to Brad, Gentry, Quinn, and Carla, who are gathered around the small dining table in the nook adjoining the living room. “OK, what’s the plan?” I ask, and we start designing our attack for the evening.

The ideas start out slow, but after about 30 minutes, I find myself smiling as my unlikely little crew comes up with some truly brilliant ideas. Despite everything that’s happened in the last 24 hours, we just might pull this off.
