“Peggy, you need to come home - right now.”

16

“I haven’t touched a thing because I wanted you to see what I came home to,” as Monique intensely greeted Peggy at the door, her hands glued to her hips like a displeased middle school teacher.

She would not reveal anything by phone, but when Peggy nervously arrived at Monique’s it was clear what had happened. Among the highlights of the mess was the precious plasma TV on the floor with a California-looking crack along the screen, framed family photos shattered and ripped throughout the living room, many a crappy romance novel strewn about, a gallon of whole milk on the kitchen floor, broken dishes and cups afloat within it, and melted Fruit Loops from a torn-open box creating a rainbow river which oozed into the dining room carpet…

“Oh my…” Peggy frozen in shock.

“And that’s not all,” declared Monique, her hostility seeming to feed off of Peggy’s disbelief. “Look at Richie and Jason’s room!”

The room in which Peggy, Luna and Nicky were staying was effectively turned upside down. The mattresses of both twin beds capsized, the mirrors shattered, presumably by Richie and Jason’s Track and Field trophies, which appeared decapitated as a result.

“Monique, I…I… Was the door left open?” Peggy could only meekly ask.

“Was the door left open? You think this was a break-in?”

“What do you mean?” Peggy braced herself. If it wasn’t a burglar, then…

“IT WAS YOUR SON!” Monique howled. “IT WAS NICKY, PEGGY! HE DID THIS! LOOK AT WHAT HE DID TO MY GODDAMN HOUSE!”

The high-pitch whistle-like sound was ascending within Peggy yet again, as she attempted to wrap her mind around how Nicky could cause such destruction. She could only act as shocked as she genuinely was, and be equally clueless at how he could find it within himself to destroy much of Monique’s home. She was unquestionably engulfed by the enormity of this situation, and how she was ultimately responsible: the one time I elected to leave him alone since we’ve been here… In looking around at the catastrophic surroundings, previously ominous signs would impede her vision, especially the photo of the North Vietnamese prisoner getting his head blown off that Nicky had doctored with colored blood and brain matter. She had submerged any concerns of how this would affect Nicky’s stability because she simply did not have time nor the patience to address it. And now here it was; his potential.

She watched Monique’s lips move with venom, and could tell she was repeating the same thing over and over, but could not hear her. Monique had lost any reverence for Peggy as the wife of her former employer, but did consider her a friend on some level, even a sounding board. But now any such feelings were incinerated. Monique even appeared on the verge of getting physical, making Peggy fear the possibility of her picking up a shard of broken mirror and slicing her throat.

Peggy clutched Luna’s frightened hand, and could only ask where Nicky was, as she trembled…

“He should be in jail, like his Goddamn father!” Monique spewed.
