I was sitting on the living room couch, my eyes closed, listening to the birds. The door was open just a crack to let in their voices but keep out most of the cold air. Usually they quieted in the afternoon, but today they were still at it. Maybe they sensed the mood in our house, the mood in the entire neighborhood — chattering and fretting.

The front door opened and Sean stepped inside. He closed it and stood staring at the door handle as if he didn’t want to let go of it. After more than a few seconds, he moved away. He shoved his hands in his pockets. He wore jeans and a pale green and white striped button-down shirt. His feet were bare.

“Sean!”

He looked over at me, shoulders hunched as a result of his pocketed hands.

“We have over two thousand page likes.”

He scowled. He pulled his hands out of his pockets and took a few steps toward the living room entrance. “What?”

“The TruthTeller Facebook page — over two thousand people have liked it.”

He walked closer. “We need a hell of a lot more than two thousand customers.”

“We just started.” I smiled. “And that’s a lot. The Facebook page is to get the word out, not a measure of how many people buy the app. Not everyone is going to interact on social media.

“Okay. That’s good, then. How did you find them? Are they interested in the app or just the name of the company?”

I didn’t answer, waiting to see whether he’d actually enter the room so I didn’t have to keep raising my voice to be heard across the rather large space. After a long pause, he did. He sat on the floor, looking up at me like a pre-school child drinking in his teacher’s face, waiting for story time.

“I post a lot of stuff. Not all of it’s about the app. If it’s always about the app, it turns into an advertisement and people tune you out. It’s social.” I smiled.

“I get that, Alex. How did you find them?”

“Quite a lot of them because I wrote about your vision for work-life balance.”

He smiled, but he looked tired, as if he no longer cared all that much.

“Anyway, it’s a huge step forward. You should be excited.”

“Will do. If you say I should be excited, I’ll get excited.” He put his head in his hands.

What a drama queen. I waited for him to explain the reason for his despairing pose.

“Detective Bender popped by,” he said.

“What did he want now?”

“I can’t be sure. Either they’re definitely trying to trap me, or he’s an ass.”

“What did he do?”

“He said some pretty shit things about Detective Martin. Said she couldn’t keep her legs closed, if that’s not too crude to repeat. She has four kids.”

I waited.

He lowered his hands and looked up. “I didn’t mean to offend you.”

“I can handle it,” I said.

“He hates having women on the police force, I guess. Thinks those jobs belong to the guys. He still thinks the murder angle is just Martin’s push to make a big deal out of it.
