Chapter 16 After Dinner
The rest of the evening passed easily and Clarice helped with cleaning up as Paul and I sat and talked for a while before bed. We carried some chairs down to the river’s edge and relaxed quietly. For much of the time, we sat silently, but we did talk some.
At one point, I said, “Paul, I have ways of clearing the areas of the woods that are overgrown.”
Paul said, “They say that you will call it Goldenwood. It’s a good name.”
I said, “Yeah. I like it. So, I can cut the trees and have them sawed into rough boards. I’m thinking that I could make a small road from the road in front of your house to the path there at the river on my side of the property and that I can clear a spot at the road and make a yard where I can leave the lumber, and the woodworker and the builders can come and get it and won’t have to pay for it, as a gift from me to the village. I would plant things around the yard, like a hedge to surround it, so that it looks good from the road and from your property, and so that it won’t be an eyesore. Do you see any problem with that? Will it put anyone out of work or make it hard on some family in a way that I haven’t thought of?”
Paul said thoughtfully, “The lumber is gathered by the woodworker and the builder as they need it. No one will be put out of work if they are saved the trouble. You won’t have them pay you for the wood?”
I said, “No. We don’t need the money.”
Paul said, “Can Clarice make another dress like the one that she’s wearing? I’d be famous if I had one like it for sale.”
I smiled and said, “Would you like to be famous? I think that she could make a very limited number. The fabric can’t be made anymore, of course, but she may have some that she can use.”
Paul said, “Of course.”
I said, “I was thinking that the woodworker and the builder could make their goods less expensive for a while if the materials are cheaper. They can make just as much money, because they can make more items and sell a higher quantity at a lower cost. Then the people of the village can spend more of their money on other things that they haven’t been able to afford.”
Paul said, “Oh, a good plan. My neighbor spends less on his barn and his table from the builder and the woodworker, and he has more money, so he buys his women new dresses. I like that idea. I sell more dresses, so I buy a new pair of boots, or another couple of chickens, or a small boat and spend more time fishing. It sounds like a good plan to me. But, if the lumber is free to them, and the cost of building
