Chapter 7

By the time they reached the cabin, Ellie’s heart rate was out of control. This was it. Finally, she would have sex with her teenage crush and quench the desires, hot and dark and secret, that she’d tamped down for so long. Those simmering desires had turned into a full rolling boil.

How often she’d dreamed of this moment as a hungry seventeen-year-old, but now she was thirty and not so young anymore.

Slow down. Do you really want to do this?

One look in his eyes and she thought, Yes, yes, I do. She wasn’t careless with her body. Had only had three lovers in her life, and she’d been in steady relationships with all three. She didn’t do one-night stands, but this was Dalton. Sure, he’d changed in the last thirteen years, but he wasn’t a stranger.

Still, she needed to set ground rules. Define what this night meant so that no one got hurt again.

“Dalton,” she said with her head thrown back as he burned kisses over her throat. “We need to talk about this.”

He stopped and pulled back. “You’ve changed your mind.”

“No, no,” she rushed to reassure him. “I’m just . . . let’s not . . .”

He raised an eyebrow. “Label it?”

“Yes. That.”

“Okay.” He went back to kissing her.

She squirmed away. “You don’t have any expectations?”

“Beyond having a great time in bed with you? No, ma’am.”

“You’re sure?”

He dragged a hand through his hair. “Well, hell, Ellie, I can’t promise how I’ll feel in the morning, but right here, right now? All I want to do is make love with you.”

Make love.

Not “have sex.”

“You’re absolutely sure?” She kept worrying her bottom lip with her top teeth.

“Let me spin this back on you, Els. What do you want out of this night?”

“To finish what we started thirteen years ago.”

“And then?”

“I don’t know.” Honesty was the best policy, right?

“All right.” He shrugged with such easy acquiescence it bugged her a little.

“Sex and nothing more?”

“If those are your rules, sure.”

“No, no.” She waggled a finger. “You don’t get to lay it all off on me. Ultimately, what do you hope to get from this encounter?”

“You in a bed,” he said. “But I would be lying if I said the eighteen-year-old kid in me isn’t hoping for more. That’s the truth. If that scares you too much, then I should go.”

“No! Don’t go.” Her sudden outburst surprised her. “I mean,” she said, modulating her voice, “I want you to stay, but I can’t make promises beyond that.”

“Fair enough.” He nodded. “Now, where were we?”

Okay, they’d sorted that obstacle. No reason to hold back.

What about tomorrow?

Ellie was a cautious person, but she’d let tomorrow sort itself out. Right now, Dalton was kissing the daylights out of her and she’d didn’t want to miss a second of it.

“Would you like to come inside?”

“I would love that.”

They peered deeply into each other’s eyes, and then she turned to unlock the cabin door. Dalton put his arm around her waist and waltzed her inside.

They were both breathing hard, and their gazes were locked.
