Orvieto

a polished white from the heart of Italy

ORIGIN

A blend of three native grapes dating back to Roman times, grown in the valleys of southern Umbria in central Italy, near the fabled towns of Perugia, Assisi, and Spoleto.

REPUTATION

Historically serious. The majestic clifftop town of Orvieto, which gives the wine its name, was the summer home of popes in the Middle Ages (Pope Gregory XVI asked that his body be washed in the wine before his funeral). Today, it’s a pale and quietly elegant dry wine. The best versions are known as Orvieto Classico.

TASTE

Subtle and refreshing, with medium body and moderate acidity, it’s an especially easygoing, user-friendly wine.

PERFECT FOOD MATCHES

Especially good with appetizers like prosciutto with melon, steamed clams, fried wontons, or fried calamari, as well as with light pasta dishes, such as spaghetti carbonara or spaghetti with pork sausage and onion.
