Clarisse

Corey waited for Clarisse to slide to the middle of the pickup seat before he stepped in the truck’s cab as if he were climbing into an alien spacecraft for the first time. “I haven’t been in one of these in ages.”

He seemed far too excited to Clarisse…almost like a little boy about to take a rocket ship ride on the fairground.

“What do you mean? The truck?” Rick said.

“Any…vehicle,” Corey said and nearly bounced on the seat next to Clarisse like an excited little boy. She felt him nudge up next to her, crowding her thigh with his long, bare, hairy leg.

She wasn’t happy about their new passenger. “They’ll treat him well, right?” she said in an attempt to get their priorities in order.

“The boy? Yeah, he’ll be fine. Bob thought he was Indian from afar. But he’s Asian.”

She scoffed. She was doing that a lot lately. “We know he’s Asian. He’s a human being, no matter his race. Why would that even matter? You’re a white guy from New Zealand. Have you noticed this about yourself?”

“Yeah…but I saved someone. So they accepted me.”

Rick leaned around Clarisse.

“What does that mean, Corey? Are you saying there’s a chance they’ll mistreat him?”

“No, no. He’ll be fine…most likely. He seems like a good kid. And they want me back. So he’s probably safe…as long as he doesn’t whine. He’s not a whiner, is he?”

They both just looked at him.

“Are you sure they want you back?” Clarisse asked.

“Yeah…” he said with scrunched eyebrows. “They need me. They just won’t let me breed with anyone though…they do have that against them,” Corey said with a tilt of his head. “What they don’t know won’t hurt them, aye?” He elbowed her in the ribs.

Rick laughed with a delay as if he’d just now decided Corey was joking.

Clarisse jabbed him hard in the side with the point of her elbow. “What? Why do they need you back?”

“Because…I’m a good hunter. I kill shit and feed the tribe.”

“I’m sure they have others that can do that as well,” she said and then tried to ignore that question and instead shot another one at him. That didn’t matter at the moment. What mattered was, “Are there any more obstacles in our way between here and Umatilla? Can you tell us that at least?”

“Obstacles? Look, just because I’m with you as your tour guide to Umatilla doesn’t mean we won’t be followed the entire time. We keep our territory safe. You were witness to that coming in. Trust me, no danger will come to you unless you’re the ones causing the danger. This is a sacred place to my people.”

“Your. People?” Clarisse said.

This time Corey, ignored her.

Rick put the truck in drive and looked out the window as the others in their team began to roll.

Clarisse took a deep breath and picked up the radio and began to click the receiver and brought the unit to her mouth.

“What are you doing?” Rick asked quickly.

“I’m calling it in. Someone has to tell Graham Bang’s current status.
