Emily disliked this. Jack's attentiveness. His pampering. Because he seemed so sincerely concerned for her well-being, and she could get used to that sort of thing. She was used to being the one doing the worrying. She was used to putting herself last. Now, for the first time in her life, someone was putting her first.

Or at least trying to.

But he was going to disappear again just as soon as he could find a way.

She hadn't told him all of what she'd wished for out at the old wishing well, because it had been so personal. It hadn't been the wish of an independent widow woman who'd traveled through many miles of life. It had been a girlish wish. Frivolous. Romantic. Silly.

She'd wished for a man to love her the way she'd always dreamed of being loved since somewhere around the age of fourteen. The dream had never gone away, though she'd given up on it ever coming true.

It would be awfully easy to convince herself Jack was that man. But he wasn't her wish come true. He was working to fulfill his promise because it would get him home all the sooner, and for no other reason. She'd best remember that.
