Dear Omar,

You must have heard the news by now. It’s true. Bata killed Sara. You never think you are going to have to type a line like that in your whole life. He tried to drink Gramoxone but they got to him in time. He’s in jail now. I have been sending meals for him because I know how particular he is about his food. The guards have been quite good and sometimes I don’t have to line up too long to get the package to him.

I suppose you’re wondering, like the rest of the island, what the hell happen to Bata that he would ups and kill his own wife. We never saw it, Omar, but Hari and I suspected he was beating her. But you know you can’t get mix up in woman and man thing. They are calling for the death penalty. I know you are going to say that it could get tie up in court for years and that they have plenty people waiting on death row to hang. But Omar, Sara was an American, and those Americans don’t make joke. They’re calling for blood. And it’s looking like they will extradite him if we don’t hang him here first.

You two were never close as brothers, but I don’t know who else to ask for help. Do you think you can come down? Christmas is nearly here and I would like to do something for the child. She is only a little thing. She turned seven last June. She’s here with us now and it’s working out okay because we had her a lot of the time anyway. Shanti doesn’t mind sharing her room with her. I don’t think they understand what has happened.

It’s sad to think that out of all of us – the cousins and we three – it was just Bata and I who stayed on Ma’s land. But now, no one wants to have anything to do with us. Hari was harassed at work last week. It’s not easy, Omar, not easy at all.

Write me if you want me to tell Bata anything. I can get a letter to him. I know he did a terrible thing but he is still our brother. Give our love to Chrissy and congratulations on the new baby.
