Chapter 23
ENSLEY
Well, that was a nutty proposition I made, but it solves all my problems.
Iâll see Drew more often. It falls within my time limit.
And I put sex on the table.
I might regret that if we go there tonight, mainly because I ate so much pasta. By the time we go out to Drewâs car after the meal, the wine, and the most outrageous Italian wedding cake, I feel done for.
As I strap the seat belt over my food baby, I wonder if I even want to get naked right now. Iâm completely self-conscious.
And unsure.
Our crazy moment in the shed came naturally.
Anything we do tonight feels forced.
Did I really insist that our three dates could have benefits?
What am I doing here? What do I want?
But I know. I want the twelve-year-old dream for Drew to be mine, even if only for a little while.
Weâve been driving about ten minutes when his booming voice in the quiet startles me. âSo does the end of dinner mean weâre done with the date? Or should there be more?â
Does he mean sex? Or more normal date stuff?
My talkative superpower is failing me. I stare out the window at the passing lights streaking through the dark.
âNow whose tongue has been eaten by a cat?â he asks.
That makes me whip my head around. âSo gross! I wish I never knew that!â
âGot you talking.â
Harrumph. âAre you using my own tactics on me?â
âIâm learning from the master.â
That placates me. âI think we should take a walk. Somewhere picturesque. What does Atlanta have?â
He glances over at me. âYou might get chilly in that dress.â
âThen you will be a gentleman and provide me your jacket.â
âAll right.â He signals to change lanes, even though there are no cars anywhere nearby. I smile inwardly. Drew Daniels does everything by the book.
We exit the freeway and make a U-turn.
âThought of a location?â I ask.
âYep.â
No more details are forthcoming.
I donât have long to wait. We exit again, and soon a park surrounds us. Wide expanses of green space end with a path along a small lake. Several people stroll under the streetlamps, mostly walking dogs. Drew finds a spot along the street and kills the car. âThis work?â
âIt looks beautiful.â
We walk along a broad path. The lake reflects the lights of the cityscape of downtown Atlanta. Itâs breathtaking.
We havenât walked very far when the chill bites into me. I hide it for a while, but as we cross a wooden bridge over the water, a gust of wind brushes my hair back, and I wind up hugging my arms over my body.
Drew takes off his suit jacket and wraps it around my shoulders, buttoning the front. My arms are still inside.
âLike a straitjacket?â I ask.
âLike a straitjacket.â His grin knocks me backward. Itâs so rare, and it lights up his face. A girl could totally fall in love with a smile like that.
The jacket smells of him. I breathe it in. Sandalwood aftershave. I only know what itâs called because I used to rip cologne samples out of the magazines in the art teacherâs room.
