CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Stephanie walked into Charles’ office without knocking, waiving the piece of paper she’d found on her desk. “Ooh, Charles, did you see this latest notice?”

Charles and Stephanie had inherited the weather forecasting responsibilities at KDEN, the local television station for Denver, when all other forecasters on staff had either resigned or disappeared.

“Stephanie, don’t bother me. I’m going on air in thirteen minutes, and I’m having trouble getting my cowlick to lie flat.”

“Charles, use my hairspray and listen to me, this is really important.” She waited for Charles to use the spray and then continued. “From now on, all we have to do is tell viewers what the weather is doing right now.”

Charles looked away from his mirror and turned to his co-weather forecaster with a confused look on his face.

“Really? So even next week we just tell them what the weather is today?”

“No, silly. I mean we just tell them what the weather is right then, each time we’re on the air.”

“Oh.” Charles started to nod, but then his look became confused again. “Wait, you mean we don’t even have to choose from one of the computer models so we can make a forecast for the next hour?”

“Nope. That’s in the next part of the notice. From now on, there’s only going to be one computer model.”

“But we still read it from the teleprompters, right?”

Stephanie re-read the notice that had been handed to her by one of the assistants. “No. I guess they didn’t like the way we alternated words the last time we used the prompters.”

“Hey! I thought that was brilliant. And when I talked to my mom, she said all her friends liked it.”

“I know. But this notice,” she waved it at him, “is quite clear.” She looked at it again. “All we’re supposed to do is stand on our spots, and report current conditions.”

Charles’ expression turned to one of horror. “You mean... we’re supposed to go outside?” He looked back to the mirror. “But I just finished doing my hair.”

“No, silly. They’re sending one of the assistants outside right before we go on air. Part of the show will be when the cameras zoom in on the assistant running in with the written report, and then we alternate. One time, I’ll stand there and smile while you read the report they hand you, and the next time you stand there and smile while I read the report.” “Whew. Well that’s all right then.” Suddenly his face brightened.

“Hey, I know how we could make it better.”

Stephanie giggled. “I’ll bet I know what you’re thinking.”
