Sharon nearly collided with Michael when she came through the entrance of the hospital; in fact, she would have if her brother-in-law hadnât reached out with both hands to prevent it.
âTony...?â she choked out, because that was all she could manage. She knew that her eyes were taking up her whole face and that she was pale.
Michaelâs expression was tender. âHeâs going to be all right,â he said quickly, eager to reassure her, still supporting her with his hands.
Relief swept over Sharon in a wave that weakened her knees and brought a strangled little cry to her throat. âThank God,â she whispered. And then, in a fever of joy, she threw her arms around Michaelâs neck.
He held her until she stepped back, sniffling, to ask, âWhere is he? I want to see him.â
Michaelâs dark eyes were full of pain. âI donât think that would be a good idea, princess,â he said, his voice sounding husky. âNot right now.â
âWhere is he?â Sharon repeated, this time in a fierce whisper. Her entire body was stiff with determination.
Michael sighed. âRoom 229. But, Sharonââ
Sharon was already moving toward the elevator. Bea, still parking the car, would have to find her own way through the maze that was City Hospital.
Room 229 was in a corner, and members of the Morelli family were overflowing into the hallway. Sharon was glad sheâd encountered Michael before coming upstairs, or she might have thought that the worst had happened.
News of her arrival buzzed through the group of well-wishers, and they stepped aside to admit her.
Tony was sitting up in bed with a bandage wrapped around his head. His face was bruised and scraped, and his left arm was in a cast. But it was the look in his eyes that stopped Sharon in the middle of the room.
His expression was cold, as though he hated her.
Vincent and Maria, who had been standing on the other side of the room, silently withdrew. Sharon knew without looking around that the other visitors had left, also.
And she was still stuck in the middle of the floor with her heart jammed in her throat. She had to swallow twice before she could speak. âI got here as quickly as I could,â she said huskily. âAreâare you all right?â
Tony only nodded, the intensity of his anger plainly visible in his eyes.
A cold wind blew over Sharonâs soul. âTonyââ
âStay away,â he said, shifting his gaze, at last, to the window. In the distance the waters of the sound shimmered and sparkled in the afternoon sun. âPleaseâjust stay away.â
Sharon couldnât move. She wanted to run to him; at the same time, she needed to escape. âIâm not going anywhere until you tell me whatâs the matter,â she told him. The moment the words were out of her mouth, she wondered if sheâd really said them herself, since they sounded so reasonable and poised.
Tony was still looking out the window. âWe cause each other too much pain,â he said after a long time.
She dared to take a step closer to the bed.
