Chapter Twenty-One
Jasper made his way down to the docks, having phased in a few hours earlier in order to be seen in his usual haunts around the city. He tried to spend as much time in Calanon as possible since making contact with Marina two weeks ago, but he did have to leave every now and then to make reports, check on Brana, and other small duties. Two weeks of hard physical labor at the docks and spending every spare moment drinking and schmoozing up to Marina and her brutes had finally paid off. He had an invitation to meet one of the leaders of the resistance tonight, a sort of entry exam to see if he was worthy of running with them. Tonight, he hoped to finally start getting some answers.
He headed toward the nearly-abandoned warehouse. He'd noticed the building before, but it was one of the buildings damaged in the fire so many years ago and no one was quite sure how it was still standing. It was from the era when the Order was more numerous with less diluted bloodlines. Much of the second story had been constructed from wood, and some of the sailors thought ghosts haunted it, damaging the structure further whenever anyone drew too close. Stone didn't shift on its own, but charred wood? Definitely possible.
Jasper hadn't wanted to go near it after being given the location last night. He didn't need anyone thinking he was snooping around. Either they'd decide to trust him on their own, or he'd at least have a better starting place than what Zeche and Rowan had been able to puzzle out.
The docks were deserted at this time of night, most of the sailors in bars or brothels if they were on shore leave. Everyone else was confined to ship for the night where their captains could keep an eye on them. The wiser captains didn't want their crews involved in riots in the city. Calanon was the trade capital and main import hub for crops from the northern continent. Getting banned from returning to the docks would end their livelihoods. Jasper smirked. Makes the fact that I'm meeting with a resistance leader down at the docks kind of ironic.
He had to play things carefully. His darker skin wasn't entirely normal among the city folk, but among the swarthier sailors who spent so much time unsheltered in the sun, he simply looked heavily tanned. The biggest thing he had to remember was that here, he wasn't a Seeker candidate. He couldn't just phase out of trouble, he couldn't use his various sights to check out buildings ahead of time. He was going in blind with only his training to guide him. Abilities that had been second-nature to him since he was old enough to remember weren't options. As long as he could keep himself in check, he should be all right.
He'd checked his weapons earlier, but his palms itched to feel the cold steel in his hands once more. Derek the farm boy, his alias, was good with throwing knives, but little else.
