Chapter Ten
The Chancellor left the room and Charles turned to TJ, âIâm concerned that you may be biting off more than you can chew. Colonizing a planet along with constructing all the ships and weapons needed to arm yourselves is going to cost you far more than you think.â
âCharles, weâve saved enough funds to pay for everything weâre going to need. Further, weâll continue to receive our bonuses from the trading contracts we established, which as you know, are the largest on Earth. The annual income from all of us here rivals Earthâs total budget.â Charles blinked. âWe believe freeing those captured civilizations is worth doing and we do have the funds we need to start and continue moving forward.â
âWhatâs your leadership going to look like?â Charles asked.
âTJ will command the fleets we build, Ezzie will command our ground forces,â Sally answered. âI will liaison with the others here to purchase the items weâre going to need. Iâm going to be responsible for our finances and purchases.â
Charles stared at Sally and Joel asked, âWhat is your stated mission?â
Everyone turned to him and TJ said, âJust what do you mean by that? We intend to go out and free those civilizations that have been enslaved by aggressive civilizations.â
âWhy not simply say youâre going out to conquer aggressive civilizations?â Joel replied. The traders stared at him and Joel raised a shoulder, âWouldnât the end result be the same?â
Sally stared at Joel and then replied, âCommon sense says it is but that just doesnât feel right to me. I donât think we have any desire to just go out conquering civilizations. Weâre focused on freeing beings that have been forced into slavery.â
Joel leaned back in his chair, âDo you think the ones that forced them into slavery are going to just sit back and allow you to do it without intervening? They will fight to protect their property and you will have to enter into conflict against them. Freeing the slaves on the planet will turn into a war against the ones that enslaved them, will it not?â
TJ turned to Charles, âWatcher, who did you say he is?â
âHeâs my grandson and he can ask some questions that are quite disconcerting. He sees things that I miss and heâs making a good point. Heâs trying to get you to see that you need to know who you are and what you are trying to accomplish before you go jumping into conflicts that could take you where you donât want to go. I told you that as long as your cause is just and noble, I will support you in your efforts. However, if you simply become another conquering civilization, I will not, and I will put an end to your plan.â The six traders stared at Charles and he smiled slightly, âIn case youâre wondering if Iâm capable of doing that, I am.â
One of the traders turned to Joel and said, âI think all of us do not see ourselves as conquerors. What do you think our mission should be?â
Joel smiled, âIâm sorry, I didnât catch your name.
