Chapter 15

“Oh, Frederick High, we’ve missed you so,” Julia teased as Kali drove into the school’s entrance. Julia was sitting next to me in the back seat, and her shoulder-length, cherry-colored hair ruffled in the breeze that came through the rolled-down windows. The parking lot was a madhouse, and I was glad I wasn’t driving the carpool this first day. Not only was the traffic crazy with freshman parents who didn’t know the system, but my nerves were still so strung out I wasn’t sure I could drive safely.

“Speak for yourself,” Matt replied from the front passenger seat. “I’ve seen plenty of this place already at football practice.”

Kali slammed on the brakes as some idiot kid practically ran right into her bumper. He laughed and waved at her, jogged between some parked cars, and then darted across the next lane. “This is ridiculous,” she murmured.

The carpool was sure to be a challenge, but the four of us were determined not to waste half our senior year stuck on the wretchedly slow busses that carted students from the outskirts of Honolulu to the assortment of private schools in town. None of us had our own car, but three of us were able to talk our parental units into borrowing a family car for one or two days a week. With Julia chipping in for gas, the PUs weren’t out any money and they were spared having to make countless rush-hour trips into town themselves every time we had an after-school activity. Besides which, driving was cool, and we all got to sleep later.

“I know that guy,” Matt said offhandedly. “Dude has a death wish.”

My muscles tensed. I should be looking forward to today. The first day of a new school year was usually pretty fun, and being seniors was sweet. Most of our classes were electives and we got to cut line at lunch. Besides, I had a lot of friends at Frederick that I hadn’t seen all summer. But of course, all I could think about was The Warning.

I’d gone over the snippet of a vision I’d had yesterday a thousand times, but could make nothing useful out of it. Matt’s hair had been damp and stuff was moving behind him. But what stuff? It could be anything. The hair was no help either. The moisture could be rain, but it could also be sweat, which narrowed down the danger not at all. The guy had football practice almost every day of the week.

“I see a space!” Julia cried out, pointing.

Kali parked the car, and we all piled out.

“What’s up, Lace?” Matt asked, throwing an arm around my shoulders as we headed for the door. “You look kind of gloomy. You’re not still sick, are you?”

“I hope not,” I replied, trying to smile. I liked the feel of his strong arm around me. It reminded me that he was okay. “I’m just taking it easy.”

“Good idea,” he agreed. Then he cast a look up at the sky, which was dotted with fluffy white clouds and bore no trace of yesterday’s downpour.
