chapter 25

* * *

Booker stood in his office at the bank. He was not pacing, he was simply standing. He could not think clearly. He had been so certain that Meadow and Mr. Carter must have been lovers, that he could not get over her denial of the fact.

It had come to him late last night, a sudden rush upon waking from his dream. It was the only thing that had made any sense. Meadow had once before used Mr. Carter's name—David—so casually as to not even notice what she'd done, demonstrating that they'd shared an intimacy at one time. Then Mr. Carter had gotten close to her at the party, blocking her path when she'd attempted to run away from him. It was not the move of a stranger but of someone who knew the other well.

Booker did not know what to believe, and so decided to refrain from making any final decisions, except one. There was no way he could do business with Mr. Carter. He had thought he would keep the man here as he attempted to learn the truth, but he now thought better of it. Meadow was far too uncomfortable to tell him anything more while Mr. Carter remained in town.

Booker sat down and wrote out a letter, thanking Mr. Carter for his time but informing him he'd decided against expansion after all. Though Booker wanted very much to help people like his and Meadow's parents—on that note he believed her, for her feeling regarding the death of her parents was far too powerful to be made up—that would have to wait. He would figure it out later.

Perhaps he'd been asking too much of the bankers he'd written to seeking assistance. Perhaps expanding to a second bank would be enough of a start. He could put one in Blisspeak. It was near enough that he might make the journey in a day or less and would therefore never be gone from home for very long. That would please both Meadow and his children.

He folded his letter, gathered up his hat, and informed Miss Littleton that he would return in a half hour should anyone come looking for him. He then left the bank and walked directly to Mr. Carter's hotel, where he left the letter at the front desk after inquiring whether Mr. Carter was in.

He'd thought if the man was present, he would do the decent thing and tell him his decision in person, but after receiving the information Mr. Carter was out and the clerk did not know where he'd gone or when he would return, Booker left the letter as planned and went for a short stroll.

Not five minutes had gone by when he heard a woman's voice call his name. "Mr. Hanson."

He turned and saw Dorothy Giles walking toward him, dragging one daughter along in each hand. He returned her smile and headed toward her. He had always liked Dorothy and her husband. She'd been good friends with Mary and had grieved right along beside him at her passing.
