THIMMAKKAâS MARRIAGE
himmakka goes back to her room in a daze. Chenni says nothing, to her or to anyone else. The two marriages take place. All evening saraayi flows in the village as Puttaswamegowda celebrates the event with an open purse.
But Thimmakkaâs marriage is over on her wedding night itself. She cannot bear the sight of Ramappa, the feel of him when he puts his arms around her. Ramappa reasons that perhaps Thimmakka is very young. He waits patiently.
The daze has lifted from Thimmakkaâs mind, though. As she mulls over the events of that night before her wedding, Thimmakka concludes that Annaiah must have seen Chenni come there. So he pushed her away. Of course he doesnât mean a word he said! He is her Siva. She yearns to go to him. She almost does too, particularly the day when the villagers tell her that Annaiahâs stories have become searingly sad and are almost drying up, like when Gangi died. But Annaiah will still send her away; she is now married to Ramappa. So she doesnât go and mopes around the house, unable to think of a way out of this bind.
She also develops a fear that Chenni will reveal her secret and stops speaking to her. She stays away from the headmanâs house and does not even go to see the new baby Sundru. She also makes sure that Ramappa, a simple man caught up in his love for her, does not speak to his sister.
Then Bangari comes to live with them. It has become embarrassing for Nagegowda to have an unmarried sister in the house when he brings his own beautiful bride in. At the same time, Thimmakka has been complaining about having to do housework. Puttaswamegowda, hearing from Bangari and others about how Thimmakka is having to cook, draw water from the well and clean the house, has been scouting around for a woman to live with her and look after the running of the household. Ajji suggests Bangari. It is the poor girlâs fate to be squint-eyed and unmarried. All she is doing here is looking after this house, Rajegowda and Sundru. Chenni can manage now and I am there to help. Let her go to Thimmakkaâs house, she says.
Daily, Bangari cooks the most mouthwatering dishes, keeps the house and its surroundings neat and tidy and looks after the needs of all in the house, including the servants. She makes Ramappaâs favourite appe midi mango pickle and he raves about it so much that the neighbours and even older women drop by to get helpings or her recipe. She does the milking in the morning, brings in the eggs from the chicken coop, feeds the cattle, the goats, the cats and dogs that run all over the house, orchard and kitchen garden and also goes in the afternoons to Ramappaâs paddy and sugarcane fields to work with him. Thimmakka, spending time taking Kannada and Hindi classes for younger girls in the village or dreaming, reading novels and listening to the radio, is oblivious to the intimacy that is developing between Bangari and Ramappa.
