Chapter Three

Walking into her dining room a few hours later, her face now styled as glamorously as her hair and her body encased in a stunning new outfit, which was discreetly hidden behind a housecoat, Claire took in the twinkling lights of the overhead chandelier, the crisp damask of the starched linen lining the table, and the gaudy arrangement of lilies, carnations, gladiolus, and lavender in the cut crystal vase in the center of it all.

Wrinkling her nose in appreciation, she studied the cold-cut platter Becky had prepared and arranged so delectably on the buffet table; the wine currently chilling beside it. Though she almost desperately wanted to pop the cork—she could do with a little liquid courage—Claire knew she needed to keep a clear head.

Glancing up at the clock, she stole a deep breath. Nipping smartly out of the room and upstairs, Claire walked briskly into her bedroom. Standing at the full-length mirror, she slowly stepped out of her housecoat and surveyed the finished product.

“It’s showtime.”
