HAWTHORNE EFFECT From 1924-1932 researchers at the Hawthorne Works outside Chicago sought to determine whether factory workers were more productive in higher or lower levels of illumination; productivity improved during the study, then slumped once it was over. It has been suggested that the productivity gain was due to the motivational effect of the interest being shown in the workers – i.e., no matter what changes the researchers made, the result would have been an increase in productivity.
