Chapter Fourteen

Shots in the Light

Aunt Connie gestured with her head but didn’t say anything. And she didn’t say anything when she got on the elevator. She went down to the fifth floor. Mac followed her off the elevator and back to Tameka’s counter.

“I’d like to see Nelson McLorrie, Tameka.” Aunt Connie didn’t bother trying to smile or schmooze this woman.

The woman glanced up at her, wariness filling her eyes. She looked like she’d been staring at her screens again, so she’d known they were coming.

“We just want to chat with him for a sec.” Mac tried to smile to offset the palpable tension that radiated between the two women who both had such strong personalities.

“About your charity?” Tameka tilted her head to one side.

Aunt Connie leaned on the counter. “We think he’s one of the volunteers from last Saturday. Several items were left behind, and we just want to make sure they get returned to the rightful owner.”

Mac forced her face to remain calm and normal, not reacting to the out and out lies her aunt had just spewed.

The woman pursed her lips. “I’m not so sure that I can help you. See Mr. McLorrie is a lot of things. He’s brilliant with numbers, he’s ambitious, but he has the personality of a calculator. I don’t see him donating anything, least of all his time and energy, to a bunch of kids. I have to wonder how you even got his name.”

“It doesn’t sound like you like him very much.” Aunt Connie tilted her head in her subtle attack.

“I don’t dislike him.” She locked eyes with Aunt Connie. “I just understand him. So I can’t help but ask what this is really about, ladies?” She crossed her arms and lifted an eyebrow.

At least she was respectful. Mac stepped closer to the counter. “My dad was with us on Saturday as we set up. Several people from here were also volunteering. We’re trying to track them down. That’s it. And Dad is in hearty approval. In fact, he told us to start on the fifth floor.” No lie there. She took out her phone. “I don’t mean to be rude, but do I need to call him and have you verify who I am?”

That seemed to disarm her. “No.” She sighed. “Mr. McLorrie’s desk is in D-wing. This floor.” She pointed to her left this time. “All the way to the back. He shares a cubicle, and his name is on the placard.” She seemed to dismiss them and began typing on her keyboard.

Mac followed her aunt down a much shorter corridor before they turned the corner to a huge room lined with small offices and filled with orange and gray cubicles. “Good grief. Dad really packs the people in this joint.”

“Like bunkhouses at a summer camp.” Aunt Connie chuckled.

They spent several minutes going from placard to placard until they found one with the names Nelson McLorrie and Carleton Ubewe.

Aunt Connie tapped on the facing of the doorway. “Is anyone here?”

“Yes. Come in.
