Memory 60

I ’m blind, yet I see everything. The world appears in ripples of colours, sounds, and emotions. A cold metal cage. The faint glimmer of a fellow koar. The dull echo of concrete. The blinding brilliance of a human being.

The sight of Jonn ignites within me the urge to kill. It spreads through me like a virus, infecting every part of my alien frame. The bloodlust is impossible to resist.

Kill!

The voice explodes within my head like a hydrogen bomb. It expulses every last rational thought, leaving only an unquenchable thirst for the downfall of all humanity.

Kill! repeats the voice.

I take a step forward.

“What are you doing?” asks Jonn. It takes a moment for my human mind to decipher the meaning of his words.

I can’t control it, I try to say, but no words come out.

I take another step. Jonn reaches for his tranquillizer gun.

Yes. Put me to sleep before I do something I’ll regret.

“Stop, or I’ll shoot,” warns Jonn as he unsheathes his pistol and aims it at me.

My alien body reacts faster than my human mind. It lunges at Jonn, knocking the tranquillizer gun from his hands.

Jonn crumbles. For a brief moment I fear he’s dead, but his glow remains just as intense. The human part of me breathes a sigh of relief when he grunts and pries himself off the floor.

I growl and bear my teeth. Jonn freezes, and our eyes meet. Time stands still. Then the voice returns and I lose all control.

Kill! urges the queen. Kill all humans! She doesn’t speak English. In fact, she doesn’t speak at all, yet I can feel her inside my head, controlling me.

I lunge at Jonn, but he rolls out of the way just in time. Unable to stop, I skid forward. By the time I manage to turn around, the grey-haired soldier is upright. He’s still weaponless, but at least he’s standing.

Kill! commands the queen. Kill him now!

My alien body readies itself for the attack. My muscles stiffen. My teeth gnash, hungry for human blood. My tail slices through the air, ready to strike. Every fibre of my being—every alien fibre, that is—relishes the slaughter to come.

“Don’t do this,” begs Jonn. He’s afraid. Somehow, this shocks me more than the fact that I’m relishing the prospect of tasting human flesh.

Jonn is my friend, I tell my body in a temporary moment of lucidity.

My bloodlust starts to fade. And with it the queen’s power over me.

No! she yells. Kill him! Kill them all!

My adrenaline spikes, and I nearly lose control again.

No! I yell. The outburst comes out as a roar, but it doesn’t matter. I’ve overcome the bloodlust. But how long before it returns? How long before I lose control and do something I’ll regret?

I must shift.

I picture myself in my mind’s eye. I imagine my powerful alien limbs shrinking. I envision my tail retreating into my body. I visualize the two halves of my jaw fusing together once more. But no amount of mental fortitude suffices to overcome the hold the alien queen has over me.
