In the 1870s the London Stereoscopic Company produced many series of hand-tinted stereoscopic and carte-de-visite sized images to be bought and collected. This carte-de-visite, purporting to show a ‘Welsh farmer’s daughter’, came from a lengthy series of studio portraits of customs, costumes and curiosities. It was No. 754 in the series, so there was little likelihood of the collector running out of cartes to purchase. These images were designed to fit into the family portrait album, and character cartes and scenic views were bought by holidaymakers, in the same way that postcards were collected throughout the twentieth century.
