With that, he broke into a flurry of bats, flying away into the moonless night.

It was gone midnight in Maradah. The Mainlands’ forces had made camp in the town, sheltering in houses, inns and canvas tents.

It wasn’t until she was sure the camp was asleep that Savanta flew down to the city. She entered the tent that she and Azzania had been allocated. She picked up a fur and threw it around her shoulders against the cold night air, before creeping over to where the Guardian slept.

She placed a hand on Azzania’s arm and her friend’s eyes opened immediately.

‘What’s wrong?’ she whispered.

Savanta put her finger to her lips and motioned her to get out of bed. She handed her a cloak, which Azzania swept around her naked body.

They left the camp in silence and Savanta led her down to the harbour.

When they were out of earshot, Azzania asked again, ‘What is it?’
