Chapter 31
December 2014
London, England
Quinn had just taken a roast chicken out of the oven when she heard Gabeâs key in the lock. He was late, which was unusual.
Emma exploded into the kitchen, looking disgruntled. âDad was late picking me up,â she complained. âIâm hungry. Whatâs for dinner?â
âRoasted chicken, potatoes, and peas.â
Emma made a face, but didnât complain. She was about to pluck a roasted potato from a bowl when Quinn smacked her hand lightly. âWash your hands first. And whereâs Dad?â
âRight here,â Gabe said as he walked into the kitchen, as if on cue, and plopped into a chair. He looked tired and annoyed, and yanked irritably at his tie until he pulled it off and tossed it on the table.
âBad day?â
âYou could say that. I couldnât leave until the police showed up,â he said by way of explaining his lateness.
âWhy were the police called?â
Gabe shook his head in dismay. âTwo more complaints were filed against Luke. He called Monty a âpoofâ and made a lewd comment to a student.â
âWhat did he say?â
âSomething about giving her a private tutorial on the nature of Roman orgies.â
âGood God.â
Gabe reached for the bowl and popped a potato into his mouth. âIâm starving.â
âIâm starving more,â Emma stated as she returned to the kitchen. âI donât want any peas.â
âWell, youâre getting some anyway,â Quinn replied. âTheyâre good for you.â
âFine,â Emma said again, oozing attitude. She sat down next to Gabe and looked at him expectantly. âSo why did the police come?â
âYes, I was wondering the same thing myself,â Quinn said, pinning Gabe with an inquisitive stare.
âI had no choice but to terminate his employment. Four complaints in two weeks are more than the board is willing to tolerate, especially since he never really denied the offenses. Luke grew belligerent and refused to leave. Jane called the police when she heard him threatening me.â
âHe threatened you?â Quinn gasped. In all her years with Luke, sheâd never known him to be violent or crass. This was completely out of character, but then again, it seemed she didnât know him as well as sheâd thought.
âHe said some things. Nowâs not the time to repeat them,â Gabe said, his gaze sliding toward Emma.
âYou can say it in front of me. I know lots of bad words,â Emma said, smiling proudly.
âDo you now?â Gabe asked, gazing down at her with interest. âAnd has this newfound knowledge anything to do with Aidan?â
âHe says his mum swears all the time, mostly at his dad. She calls him a wankââ
âThatâs quite enough,â Quinn said as she set a plate before Emma. âEat your dinner.â
Emma gave Quinn a sullen look, but didnât comment. Instead, she turned toward Gabe. âDid they put him in handcuffs, Daddy?â
âNo, they gave him a warning and escorted him off the premises. I hope heâs not foolish enough to return. As is, heâs just about committed career suicide.â
âWhatâs a suicide?â Emma asked, her mouth full of potato.
âItâs when someone doesnât value something and allows themselves to lose it,â Quinn replied. She wasnât about to explain taking oneâs own life to a five-year-old.
