SETTING AND ATMOSPHERE This indoor-outdoor space is rich with the yeasty aromas of breads and cakes, plus whiffs of herbs and spices. Hardwood floors and large glass display counters distinguish the dining room. A pleasant patio with colorful umbrellas fronting the café is the perfect perch for a quick cappuccino and pastry while you people-watch.

HOUSE SPECIALTIES For brunch, eggs Benedict, short rib hash, or the BELT sandwich, with eggs over easy, bacon, lettuce, and heirloom tomatoes. For lunch and dinner, entrée salads with shrimp, chicken, or fish; pastas and flatbread pizzas; and sandwiches like the spicy barbecue bacon chicken, with sriracha barbecue bacon jam.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS Take home one or more loaves of the artisanal breads. If you just want a quick soup or salad, you can get it slightly cheaper from La Brea’s express counter.

SUMMARY AND COMMENTS It’s all about the bread … and the muffins, pastries, desserts, and anything else containing flour and yeast. Breakfast is the obvious time to enjoy La Brea, and if you must supplement your carbohydrate fix, add some smoked salmon or pecan-smoked bacon. At lunch and dinner, the salads, sandwiches, and flatbread pizzas take over. Service has improved markedly in recent years; servers are more attentive and pleasant. Get there early—it’s the first eatery at the east end of the resort entrance, and a popular starting (and ending) place for tourists and locals alike. The express counter serves Silverback Coffee, which supports the people and gorillas of Rwanda, with much less waiting than at Starbucks.
