For whatever the political, social, or cultural reasons (and I think there are many), there has been a tremendous flood in recent years of people learning—or in some cases, relearning—and bringing the art of handwork into their lives. The age-old skills of knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing, spinning, and more have seen a resurgence among people of all ages. I believe people crave a bit more of a simple, heartfelt, and handmade presence in their lives. They long for something unique and individual as an alternative to the manufactured. They are seeking a connection to their past in the way that handwork is a thread connecting generations. They are looking for ways to slow down and be more present, mindful, and full of intention in their busy, modern lives. And they want to share these ancient and rather sacred traditions of handwork with their children.

Children benefit from handwork for the same reasons that we do—from the resourcefulness, mindfulness, and the connection to our past—and perhaps even more. Young children learning the rhythm of using their hands for a craft will be creatively and intellectually stimulated by its presence in their lives. Their appreciation for the art of handmade objects will equal their confidence and excitement in their own ability to make things with their hands. This chapter will get you and your child started in handwork.
