The day, which had started out well for Rita, then deteriorated for a little while at lunch before miraculously bouncing back, was almost over. She and Neve had spent a couple of hours driving around the surrounding area before returning to the house for barbecued steaks, fries, and salad.

They both were tired as they sat on the porch watching the sun go down. “You know, the more I stay here, the larger I’m going to be.” Neve placed her left hand on her full stomach as she reached for her bottle Corona before taking a swig.

Rita chuckled. “Me too. Walking around the stalls during the day seemed to help keep the weight down.”

Neve grinned before a serious expression crossed her face. “Do you miss the circus, Rita?”

Rita didn’t hesitate. “I do, very much. It’s not worth my asking you the same question because I know the answer.”

“I’m that obvious? Yeah, I guess I am. I’ve spent the whole of my life in the circus in one form or another. I feel like a fish out of water anywhere else. Although….” Neve took another drink of her beer.

“Although?” Rita turned to gaze at Neve’s partially averted profile.

Neve seemed lost in thought. “Here, with you, I think it wouldn’t be so bad.”

Surprised by the reply, Rita was speechless.

“Does that surprise you? It shouldn’t. We’ve forged a good friendship, I think, and to be honest, I’ve never had that before.”

Rita instinctively reached out and took Neve’s hand in hers. “That must be one of the most wonderful things anyone has said to me. I value our friendship, too, Neve.”

Neve gazed intently into the serious eyes of Rita. Then her hand squeezed Rita’s hand. “How tired are you?”

“Hmm, I guess I’m tired, but not so much that I couldn’t do something else if you have an idea in mind.” Rita grinned.

Neve’s lips curved into a teasing grin. She took Rita’s hand and hauled them both out of their seats and into a standing position. The unexpected action had Rita toppling toward her. Seconds later, Neve held Rita in her arms with their faces an inch apart. “Sorry about that.”

Rita felt her heart thumping at Neve’s closeness. Her throat was dry, but she managed to whisper, “Don’t be sorry.”

The throaty words floated between them and Neve lowered her head slightly, moving toward the lips that were so tantalizingly close…

“Rita?”

Both women broke apart as the gruff voice of Dan Flounder invaded their personal space.

Rita rapidly turned toward the man and frowned. “Dan, what are you doing here?”

Dan moved his bulky frame closer to the porch steps. “I came to take you out. You said you’d call and you didn’t. Anyone would think you’re avoiding me.”

Rita rolled her eyes, lifted one shoulder, and looked at Neve who retook her seat. She stepped down onto the path blocking Dan’s view of Neve. “It isn’t convenient to go out with you, Dan. You should have called me first instead of just coming to my home.”

Dan’s upper lip curled. “I did call about three hours ago—no one answered.
