Secular
Secular holidays are special days that are not necessarily connected to religion. Some families choose not to celebrate secular holidays, while others do. These holidays often coincide with times of the year. Fourth of July and Memorial Day both occur on specific days. Some of our personal favorite secular holidays include Halloween, New Year’s Eve, and Mother’s/Father’s Day.
Halloween Games
Halloween is a fun holiday with a plethora of related vocabulary. Right off the top of our heads, we can think of spooky, scary, silly, funny, ghost, vampire, monster, costume, candy, trick or treat, and so much more. Practice using these words while preparing for Halloween. There are many cute, age-appropriate books and movies to enjoy together at this time of the year. These may be found at your local library or bookstore.
Costumes provide a large source of language. Take turns describing costumes you see at the store or on other children. Talk about which costumes they like and which are too scary.
Some Halloween games that are fun to play include:
1.Mummy Wrap. Wrap your child with toilet paper.
2.Pin the Wart on the Witch. Find or draw a picture of a witch on posterboard or paper. Place it on the wall and have your blindfolded child attempt to pin a paper wart with tape to the witch’s nose.
3.Find the Pumpkin. Hide a small, store-bought pumpkin or cut out a pumpkin shape, and then hide it around the house and ask your children to find it.
4.Harvest Bowling. Use flat-bottom vegetables such as ears of corn cut in half, and place them like bowling pins, then use small round pumpkins as the balls.
