CHAPTER TWENTY
Gabryle stares up at the ceiling. Light appears around the edges of the curtain. Layla is breathing softly in the other bed. He thinks about how he doesnât have any backup. He canât call in and request to monitor the town. Some of the townspeople are wary of him, like the man that lent Layla his laptop. But if sheâs willing to leave with Gabryle, thereâs nothing they can do. Even if she is unwilling, no one can do anything to stop him. The Council thinks Gabryle is meeting up with Chase first. Finding Layla before Chase isnât good for Chase. Chase would have been able to track Layla from the portal exit, so Gabryle switched their places and said Chase was keeping his distance on his orders. The two of them are further apart than Gabryle led the Council to believe.
He had found Layla quickly and doesnât think she created too much suspicion. He hopes she hasnât said something stupid. Gabryle closes his eyes. Any of these loose ends can be fixed afterwards. Right now he needs to focus on the next step.
Once he has a plan, Gabryle gets up and opens the curtains and turns on the overhead light. Layla wakes with a start. Her eyes are red and her face is blotchy. He doesnât comment.
âWeâre leaving after breakfast,â he tells her. Gabryle changes into a pair of jeans and puts his holster back on over his shirt, covering it with a jacket. Once Layla has changed and pulled her hair back into a ponytail, they make their way down to the restaurant in silence. He can smell breakfast food from the top of the stairs. Theyâre served croissants with thin slices of meat, cheese, fruit, and hash browns, and Layla gets a side of bacon. Layla goes ahead of him back to the room to brush her teeth while he pays for their meals and the room in cash, thanking the owner for taking care of his sister. In a half-hour, theyâre carrying their bags down the stairs.
The owner of the laptop stops in front of Layla and puts his hands on her shoulders. She thanks him again and they hug. Over her shoulder, the man glares at Gabryle. He doesnât even blink. Gabryle steps forward and holds out his hand. The man takes it and grips tight. Gabryle forces out another thank you while thinking about how easy it would be to crush this manâs hand. And then maybe break his nose.
âCâmon, we should go,â Layla says, giving Gabryle a pointed look. Gathering in the restaurant is a crowd of townspeople to wave goodbye. Layla smiles and waves back. Gabryle turns to hide his frown. She may not have made a scene but Layla has been noticed.
When theyâre out the door, Gabryle leads her down the street to where he parked a car. Itâs a compact four-door car. On the bumper is a sticker with the name of a fake rental company. He loads the trunk.
