CHAPTER EIGHT

SHE KEPT WAITING FOR Alpha to bring up the upcoming holiday. Now that she was no longer blocking it out, she was seeing it everywhere. Parties, parades, special sales in all kinds of retail establishments both physical and virtual. People declaring color schemes for certain social factions. People demanding boycotts. It was talked about everywhere, it seemed, but between Talyn Penthes and Sharif Tanaka Six-Alpha. Until a week after her initial meeting with her Unique design team, and the day after her first fittings.

“How is the new dress coming along?” he asked as they were walking from the collection rooms to the kitchen after a particularly productive day at her loom.

She was tired, but in a good mood, so she decided she would bring it up. “Which one? Mind you, a couple of them are pant suits.”

He stopped. “You’re making more than one?”

“You expect me to wear the same ensemble to six official events over the course of a week? Plus all the semi-official gatherings where you’re expected to make some kind of appearance? Besides, it’s not me making all of it.”

She watched his cheeks color. He cleared his throat twice before he could get out, “You know about the Landing schedule already, then.”

“You have a very good curator. Danae asked me about wardrobe almost a week ago—I think because some of her friends in the design community put her up to it. And they’re very good designers and ateliers, so I’ll be wearing Unique designs exclusively.” She tugged on his arm. “Not the horrible things in your closet. I’m planning to get away with it by playing the Zonan card.”

“You’ve really thought this through.” He sounded impressed, but he looked shocked.

“Not entirely me—remember the Unique designers pushed Danae into asking me what I was going to wear. They’ve done a lot more work than I have. Shoes, jewelry, even comfortable underwear is on the list.”

“Who are they?”

“Well, they’re ostensibly family members of Prudence Weaver.” She let her fondness for the group out in a soft smile. “I’m not sure their DNA would prove that, but it works for me.”

He stopped again. “The Prudence Weaver who owns a fiber shop in the warehouse district?”

“Unless there are several of them. That’s where I bought the yarn for my silk brocade.” She smiled wider. “Danae took me there.”

He grunted and started walking again. “She…well, Miz Weaver has ties to…some unsavory elements.”

“You mean the Unique underground?” For this she kept her face entirely neutral.

“How do you know about that?” Outrage and astonishment colored the question—obviously he had forgotten that she had more contact with the populace outside of the compound than he did at this point.

“Graffiti can be wonderfully informative if you know what to look for and what questions to ask.” She smiled to herself, remembering a favorite slogan. “They have a point, too. Which is why I’ll be wearing Unique designs for the Landing festivities. And the pantsuits are Ekaterina Mugabwe, just so you know. The rest are less well known.
