I made him come ziplining with me after that.

It was already on my agenda for the day, but was something that I’d considered canceling since I knew Zay would follow me for my protection.

Now that we’d connected, though, it felt a little wrong to put him through such a stressful day while he was in his bodyguard capacity.

So… I decided he would come along as my companion instead.

He didn’t complain.

He gave me a long ass look, but he didn’t complain.

He went back to his room for a bit after we had that breakfast, so he could get fresh clothes and all that. But he came right back, just like he said he would, and then he and I headed out together.

Even that was exhilarating.

Like I’d told Tempest, I still didn’t want to overthink this thing between us, but it was tough not to.

Not when he made me feel the way he did.

And so… I once again came back to a feeling of, with everything I’d gone through, if this worked in my favor, I deserved it.

If it didn’t… I’d survived worse.

“Hey what’s wrong?” I asked Zay, when we were at the tower we’d be diving from, already all strapped into our gear. He had a scowl on his face, and I wasn’t sure if it was because I had insisted on doing this despite his – unspoken - reservations, or if he saw something he didn’t like and was scoping out the scene.

“Huh?” he said, and I noticed how he kept a firm eye on the expanse of trees we’d be zipping over.

“Hey… you’re not… scared of heights, are you?”

“What? Nah, I’m not scared of heights. I’m fundamentally opposed to unnecessary risks.”

“Oh my God,” I left. “You are scared of this aren’t you?!”

“I’m not scared, I’m healthily concerned about this shit,” he corrected as the zipline attendant walked up to us.

“All right, y’all,” he said. “Whose going first?”

“He is,” I chimed, before Zay could answer.

“The hell I am,” he denied.

“You have to go first, so you can wait for me,” I giggled. “It’ll give you the chance to figure out any danger that might lay ahead.”

“I’m looking at the danger—it’s right there,” he said, pointing out at the treetops.

“Wow… You are more nervous about this than I am!”

“Considering that your ass seems completely unconcerned, that’s not saying that much.”

“I’m not completely unconcerned,” I denied. “I’m just… very committed to doing this. I’ve been mentally preparing, and I’m just going to get it done. And you are going to go first and wait for me, right? And make sure it’s safe?”

Isaiah blew out a sigh, but he still nodded his head.

And a few minutes later, he fulfilled that commitment by taking off.

Yelling at the top of his lungs, but still.

As the attendant prepped me, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

I hadn’t told Isaiah that I was feeling in need of a jump start - something to wake me up and remind me I was alive. And that I
