COMRADES IN ARMS

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages. D-Generation X proudly presents the badass Billy Gunn, the Road Dogg, Jesse James, the New Age Outlaws!”

HUNTER: When Shawn left after WrestleMania XIV, there was a big void for me. My best friend was no longer there. But on the other hand, there was also a huge burden off of me. Shawn was pretty messed up at the time. Sometimes it was a struggle to get him to the shows. There were times when he didn’t want to do anything, and there were times when he bitched a lot.

The weeks leading up to WrestleMania XIV were the most stressed out I’ve ever been. There was a good chance Shawn wasn’t even going to show up. He was just so angry. Every day he would find some little thing that made him so furious that he was ready to leave. He made outrageous demands on everyone. He tried to be the biggest jerk, and because of our friendship, it was my responsibility to make sure he did what he should do. So when he left, there was a part of me that was relieved because he had been so out of control.

With Dogg, Billy, Kid, and Chyna, we just had fun. We all got along. With Shawn and me, it was different. We were by ourselves. It went very quickly from anger and heat and people wanting to kill us, to people loving us in the new incarnation of DX. With Shawn we had a friendship and all we had was each other, and we formed a close bond.

With the four of us now, it was just like being in college or high school with a bunch of other jack-offs—together with Chyna, who played at being the straight person in the group. We would go out and do the dumbest things we could think of. Whatever we thought was funny, we would do. Sometimes it was funny and sometimes it really sucked. Sometimes it was so bad it was funny. But it was just off-the-cuff stuff. Most of it was us just trying to make each other laugh.

We were doing everything on the fly, and it would work because we had a similar sense of humor. Road Dogg might be the funniest guy on the planet. The Armstrongs are all funny, and Brian is probably the funniest out of all of them. When Brian and I rode together when we were in DX, all we would do is laugh. My abs would hurt from laughing so much at the end of a four-day run with him.

So we didn’t have any trouble getting things started. Billy was much more serious. He can be funny, but he’s usually pretty serious. But he laughed at our funny stuff. Kid was kind of slow and would fall behind, but then every now and then he would just say something really funny and we’d all crack up laughing.
