Chapter 22: The Past is of Use
Madeline looked out the window at the now quiet streets below. Hours had slipped away bringing the absence of both people and VFPs in the fading light.
Freya, a mere whimper in a quiet corner, had not spoken or even moved for hours. Alfie lay beside her, occasionally licking her face to which the little girl did not react. Madeline looked over at her, concerned. How did she help the little girl? Should she make her try to eat something? Drink something at the very least? She still had water in her backpack. Michael similarly appeared lost in his own thoughts. He looked straight ahead, staring into a void. She sensed his guilt.
Madeline understood guilt intimately, recognising its corrosive touch. It was a quiet whisper in the recesses of her mind.
Shaking herself she crawled over to where Michael was sitting. âMichael. Itâs quiet outside. We should get moving.â
Slowly he turned to look at her, his eyes carefully focusing on her face. âMove to where? Move with what? We donât have transport. And even if we did by the time we found a car or a motorbike or something we would make so much noise those things would be on us again.â
âWell for now they seem to be gone. I donât know where but hopefully far enough away, cause I have an idea.â Without saying more Madeline moved over to Freya and gently coaxed some water into the little girl. Then packing her backpack and grabbing Freyaâs hand she turned to Michael. âCome on.â And without looking back she quietly made her way down the stairs. She just hoped that he was following her.
Silently, they ventured further into the estate, their cautious steps muffled by manicured lawns. Where had all the people gone? An undercurrent of fear gripped Madeline. Surely there were some left? If not, where were the VFPs?
Michael, his voice barely above a whisper, turned to Madeline. "Where are we going?"
âTo the riding club on the other side of the estate.â
âRiding club? Riding what?â Incredulously she looked at him.
âHorse riding.â She really wanted to say âduhâ but took pity on him.
âUmm why?â
âCause if cars and motor bikes are too noisy and letâs face it we are not going to make it on push bikes, then horses are a great idea.â
âUmm Madeline?â Michael hissed, making her stop.
âWhat?â
âI canât ride a horse.â
âDonât worry Iâll help you.â
âUmm so you can-â Just then Madeline held up her hand to silence him. A group of VFPs were parked in the middle of an intersection. They seemed to be just standing there, heads cocked listening to the wind. Putting her finger to her lips she carefully retreated down the opposite street. Michael nodded his head and together they entered the yard of an adjoining house.
The sprawling acreage blocks within the lavish estate sported minimal fencing allowing them to manoeuvre between properties. They headed around the back of the property moving through the back yard and on to the next house.
