Chapter 12

Daniel and Sazon followed Fastal and Davin through thick underbrush, the night sky lost behind tree branches, thorns tugging at their clothes. The snap of sticks and steady footfalls were the only sounds around them.

“I don’t mean to abuse my caste, but where are we going?” Sazon asked. She got caught up on a branch and tugged her shoulder forward.

“Shh!” Fastal hissed.

Daniel freed Sazon from the branch and gave her a pat to hurry her forward. “Don’t want to get lost,” he said.

“How in the deep darkness can we get lost? We can only go forward,” the Shadow said.

“Shh!” Fastal hissed again.

They continued until they reached a small clearing where a steep cliff loomed up from behind a thin band of trees. Pioneers formed a perimeter, older, beat-up-looking weapons in hand.

“Here,” said a Blooded, lifting up a patch of grass, revealing a set of stairs.

“Wait, no one said anything about—” Sazon backed away from the tunnel.

Fastal executed a parade ground about-face and grabbed Sazon by the shoulder. He dragged her toward the edge of the clearing and moved his face close to hers. A one-sided conversation of short sentences began.

Daniel knew enough to keep his distance.

“What kind of Linker are you?” Davin asked. She removed her beret and swapped it for a short-brimmed hat from her pocket. “I thought your caste didn’t get involved in fights like this.”

“There’s never been a fight like this,” Daniel said quietly. “The human caste will kill all of us. Heretic. Kingdom. Every last Islander ship. They won’t spare anyone. If we Linkers lose our special relationship with the rest of the Tyr because of this…at least someone will be alive to damn our names to the Far Darkness.”

“Let me give you a tip,” Davin said, tilting her head toward Fastal as his conversation with Sazon continued. “The general has not disrespected the Shadow’s caste. You didn’t see anything.”

“See what?” Daniel shrugged.

“Keep it that way. Fastal’s more important to us than any random Linker.” Davin brushed her hands over a holstered revolver.

“Keep what what way?” Daniel smiled.

Sazon hurried past them and went straight into the tunnel.

“You, with me.” Fastal smacked the back of his hand against Daniel’s shoulder then cracked a glow stick and handed it to Daniel.

The tunnel was just wide enough for two adults to walk side by side, though Daniel had to crouch slightly beneath the rough-hewn tunnel top. The ground was bare dirt, and dust hung heavy in the air, irritating his throat.

“We need to discuss the next step,” Fastal said. “We seize a warhead and then how do we…win the day? You promised a way.”

“My wife has it,” Daniel said. “I will contact her when we’re ready. We can’t risk losing that asset.”

“And how will you contact her?” Fastal asked.

Daniel gave Fastal a dirty look.

“I understand why you’re hesitant,” the general said. “But put yourself in my place. If you’re killed in this operation, what am I supposed to do next? Hope?”

Daniel coughed as the dirt became too much.

“Am I the only Linker you know?” Daniel asked.
