CHAPTER 13
âWhy are we getting on a train?â
Logan pulls me through the Ronkonkoma train station towards a silver and blue double decker. Its engine growls, shaking the concrete platform at our feet as we race towards the front of the train. He pulls me in as the door closes and the chimes ding.
We hustle up a small set of stairs and onto the upper deck. Itâs a bit tighter up here, but the car is mostly empty being that it isnât rush hour. He finds a spot that satisfies him amongst the empty rows of blue seats, and allows me to go in first.
âThis is the train to Greenport, the next stop is Medford.â A robotic voice talks over the loudspeaker.
We lurch forward as we begin to depart from the station. I turn my attention to him.
âYouâre taking me to Greenport?â My eyes light up. I havenât been to Greenport since we were young. We would go every summer with his family and ride the carousel, eat at a restaurant in town, have ice cream at our favorite little shop, then run around on the beautiful grassy knoll near the carousel. His dad was really into trains, so weâd drive all the way to the Ronkonkoma station and board there.
âWe had a lot of great times out there, so I figured today would be a good day to visit.â
Deep down, I know heâs thinking about his dad. The memories associated with Greenport all involve him.
âAt the wedding, you mentioned you missed eating at the little diner where we would order chicken and fries to annoy Charlotte. She never understood how we could eat the same thing every time.â
I smile. âRemember the time when she ordered the same thing two years in a rowâI think it was the turkey sandwich or the BLTâand we called her out on it?â
His laughter fills up the empty train car. His shoulders shake and rub against me with every movement. He rests his hand on my thigh, warmth spreads over me.
âShe was pissed for the rest of the day, and then she pushed me in the water when we went over to the beach.â
Tears roll down my cheeks from laughing so hard. I donât mean to make fun of Charlotteâs quirk, but it was funny. She told me later that night that she wasnât really mad at me, only Logan.
âRemember the year Dad took us to Shelter Island on the ferry at Greenport?â His demeanor changes slightly, the crinkles in his eyes disappear, but a small smile remains.
âI do. I think it was the last year we were there. You capsized our kayak, and your dad jumped in, because I wasâand still amâa terrible swimmer.â
From underneath my hand, he curls his pinky up and around mine, squeezing it. I cup my hand and slowly tighten my grip too.
âSo, what are our plans for today? No kayaking, I hope.â
He chuckles. âWe are strictly staying in the village. Iâm thinking by the time we get there we should go order some chicken, then take a walk by the docks and ride on the carousel.
