But she most not forget. And she must make sure that her children grew up in the country, where they could be carefree and boisterous if they wished without always being under the eye of reproving parents. Strange! She had never thought of having children with Lord Waite. She could not imagine him as a father. But she had always wanted children, had always considered that her life would not be complete without. It had been one of the trials of life with Wilfred as time and her youth slipped past, to know that she could not give birth as long as he lived on. She and Tom had wanted six children. She smiled, watching him down on the floor playing a game of pick-up sticks with Lucy. It would have been good. Six would have been no burden to him. He would have played with them all with the same patient cheerfulness that he displayed now. Felicity felt an instant's regret. She had assumed in the last month that Wilfred had rescued her from a life of dullness with Tom. But maybe it would not have been dull. Had she never moved away from home, never traveled, never sampled the delights of society, she might have been happy. She would always have been sure of Tom's devotion. She would have had several of his children by now. She wondered curiously if he ever felt similar regrets. She thought of asking him, but the question was too personal even for their friendship.
