Chapter 17
antiscians
(n) people who live on opposite sides of the world, âwhose shadows at noon are cast in opposite directionsâ
After we got back from Spring Break, the weeks took on the kind of speed that only exist between mid-semester and finals. That is to say, they flew by. And then, classes were done, and we were packing up the house to leave for the summer. I have such mixed feelings about going home. On one hand, I get another shot at a national title and being that much closer to landing a spot on the Olympic team next year.
On another, Iâll miss my friends so much. Gabby and Cora have been such a source of comfort and happiness this year, and the girls on our team have given me amazing memories.
And most of all, how do I say goodbye to Luca? There hasnât been a day that I havenât seen him since August, aside from Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the distance is already wearing on me. Well, on us, if Iâm to be honest.
The closer weâve gotten to D-Day (Driving Home Day) the surlier Lucaâs gotten and the sadder Iâve become. Every summer Luca works sixty to seventy-hour weeks in the restaurant that his mother and Nonna run together to save money for the school year. Iâll be working close to forty hours a week with my home elite team. Heâs been clingier than usual, and I canât fault him for it, because Iâm feeling the dread, too. I wish we could visit each other during the summer, but our schedules are packed.
Gabby pokes her head through my doorway as Iâm zipping up another suitcase. Weâre not fully packing since her parents are keeping the house rented for us, and Gabby is staying here this summer with Dylan.
Gabby had to tell them about Spring Break, since they were going to get the hospital bill, so they were actually okay with Dylan staying for Summer. Plus, sheâs an adult, but I canât help but think that my parents would pitch a fit.
âWhen are you two heading out,â she asks, bouncing as she flops onto the bed. I heave a sigh and flop down next to her.
âDay after tomorrow,â I groan out. âThe drive is horrendous, but weâre stopping in Tennessee overnight to break it up.â
âHow long is the total drive?â
âTwenty-four freaking hours.â Double groan.
âGood God woman, no wonder youâre moping around!â she gasps.
I throw my arm over my face, well aware that Iâm being melodramatic and not caring at all. A big Luca shaped part of me doesnât want to go at all.
âNo kidding. I would say screw it and letâs fly, but I need the jeep this summer.â
âWell, maybe you can find some car games to break it up. Twelve hours in the car for two days straight would make me lose my mind.â
âI found some audio books that Raven said she would be willing to listen to, so thereâs that. What are you and Dylan going to do this summer with all of us out of the house?â I ask, nudging her side lasciviously.
