Dear Mom,

In case by the time you read this you’ve forgotten what I said last night, this is just a little reminder: There is no way I’m coming home for Christmas. No way. I’m going to see Michael. It’s all planned. Pleasepleaseplease don’t not-at-all-subtly hint about how totally devastating this will be to people like my father and my sister. (And I know you were only speaking on their behalf, not your own.) This is what out here they call non-negotiable. And no, Michael will not come there; it’s my turn to go to his place. We hardly ever have time alone together in Ohio. And time alone is what we need.

And in case you are still clinging to the notion that this means I don’t love you, I have three words for you: I love you.
