Chapter 10

Henrietta tugged the hood further over her face as she, Ryder, and three other men walked along the road heading into the lands of Mograth. Jareth and Jojin had wanted to come, but after two hours of intense discussion, Ryder finally helped her convince them it was best they stay behind. They had no way to know if Jareth’s men were even still here. And if they were, if it wasn’t a trap set up by Urlick or William. She was not going to risk his life or Jojin’s.

Jareth told her what the soldiers said, how it sounded as if Urlick was going to use all magical creatures he captured for some dark purpose. That included Jojin. Worse now that they heard the troll speak. Word would reach Urlick before long of a talking troll. If he did manage to capture Jojin, how long until he realized what else the troll could do?

“We’re being watched,” Ryder murmured quietly beside Henrietta, dragging her from one set of worries to the next.

She bobbed her head to acknowledge his words but did not slow her pace. Jareth informed them as they left that the elves guarded their land fiercely. The moment they entered their territory, they would be watched though they might never see any sign of elves. Their watch towers blended in with the vast trees of the forests. As the morning sun grew higher in the sky, fairies flitted around their small group, searching for anything shiny. When they found nothing, and Ryder grunted in annoyance at most of them, they flitted off.

Mograth appeared as any other kingdom at first glance. They were quite a few leagues from the capital city of Silver Starlight. There were several small outlying villages and Jareth told Henrietta his men had been instructed to wait for him at the first one, Sahar. It was where he would always begin his journey as ambassador to the elvish kingdoms. The road curved, and when they rounded the bend, they found a sign pointing them either onwards towards Silver Starlight or to the right where Sahar resided.

“This way,” Henrietta said, more to break the tense silence that had fallen over their small group. The men hid their bows beneath their cloaks, and with the way Ryder stood, his hand was braced on his sword.

Several elves and men passed them by, smiling politely and not giving them any trouble. Henrietta’s fingers twitched in her long sleeves, ready to magic them out of danger if need be. Once they arrived in the town, she smiled. If not for the slightly fancier wooden structures built in the style of the elves with curves and vast arches as well as beautiful landscaped gardens and flower beds, she almost believed she was back in Bleakwater. Her heart gave a slight pang. She’d been away from her coven many times before and was never homesick. But she missed the small village that had taken them in with Jojin. Given them a place they belonged.
