If you practice with your body, which includes your mouth and your mind, your spirit will eventually follow. Strozzi-Heckler has found that:▶ Three hundred repetitions of an action establishes a muscle memory

▶ After three thousand repetitions, the action becomes part of who you are

There’s not a parent alive who hasn’t pretended to be patient when they were feeling anything but. If you do it enough times, you actually become the patient parent that you want to be.

One of the reasons the “fake it till you make it, practice till you feel it” model works is because it’s self-reinforcing. You do it and you feel better, and after a time or two, or three thousand, someone responds in a more positive way, and it reinforces the validity of your approach.

For the record, when it comes to holding a space for the other person’s agenda I’m probably at three thousand repetitions with my clients and kids, and it really is part of who I am. But I’ve probably barely cracked three hundred with my husband. Which means I know what it feels like, but it’s not always my natural inclination.

However, I remain hopeful that with about 2,700 more practice sessions, I will indeed become a superstar spouse.
