Chapter 10

The time at Woleshome went quickly and before they knew it, it was mid-January and time to go to Prince Edward’s country home, Sandringham House in Norfolk.

The teenagers were dreading it. Bertie was known for his lavish entertainment. They correctly figured there would be a large dinner party with over one hundred guests and a ball with a couple of hundred more.

At the dinner, the prince ignored protocol and placed the four teenagers and Tom next to him at the head of the table. Jack sat next to the prince and Beth sat next to Jack. On the other side of the table was Sonny next to the prince, then Anne and then Tom.

The table was about two hundred feet long and sat over one hundred people. The teens were overwhelmed by the size of the room and the table. Jack thought it was decadent, a conspicuous show of wealth.

This was highly irregular. The seating was normally assigned by rank. The highest ranking sitting next to the prince, the next highest at the other end of the table next to the princess and so on. The least ranking sitting in the center of the table.

The prince wanted this seating arrangement so he could talk to the teens and Tom. He had a multitude of questions and being the rake that he was he wanted to be near Anne and Beth.

“Miss O’Day,” said the prince, “are you carrying your pistol and knife on you now?”

Anne smiled sweetly and said, “No your Highness, Lord Thomas admonished me not to.”

“Pity, I would like to see them, especially your famous Green River knife.”

“I would have liked to have shown you but for Lord Thomas.” Thomas blushed and began stuttering.

The prince waved him off. Thomas reached for his wine glass.

“It was given to me by none other than the famous mountain man Liver Eating Johnson.”

She told him the tragic story of the Liver Eater and his vendetta against the Crow Indians. She explained the Indian belief of eating part of the liver, the heart or the brains of your enemies or an animal that you had killed gave you the enemy’s or the animal’s strength and courage.

From the first time the prince had met them he was fascinated by their stories and wanted to hear more.

“Jack, as a boy of twelve did it ever bother you that you had just taken a life?”

“Not a bit. I have never lost a moments sleep over it. The man deserved killing. My only regret and I have lost sleep over this, is I didn’t kill Curly Bob and Slim. It was Curly Bob who shot Anne and took part in her family’s slaughter. I kick myself every time I think of it.”

“But you had given your word not to kill him if he let Miss McLane go.”

“I should have killed him anyway. You can lie to the devil. After I met Anne and she described the man who shot her, I swore I would never make that mistake again and I haven’t.
