The other three search the property and find no more intruders. We take an inventory of the night’s damage, which includes five dead bodies. Being in the vicinity of a corpse is not as bad as one’s led to believe in TV shows and movies. Don’t get me wrong, it’s far from pleasant, but it’s not as if the sight of a body induces uncontrollable vomiting. It doesn’t work like that.

The worst of the lot is the one we find outside. He was obviously sent to be the lookout. He’s a mess, but I recognise the bottle scar on his face – it’s the bastard who nicked Zach’s tools. Zach says that when he heard noises in the house, he went out the back door and grabbed a panga from his bakkie. Checking around the house, he heard a shot being fired and crept up on the lookout who was standing off to the right of the kitchen door, smoking a cigarette. Zach raised the panga above his head and brought it down on the man’s collar, cutting to the bone. The gun fell out of the lookout’s hand, which had gone instantly limp. As the gun hit the walkway, a shot went off into the hedge. This was the shot that woke me after I’d passed out. Anyway, Zach lifted the panga again, this time silencing the gunman permanently as he hacked a gouge across his neck. Apparently the lookout went down in a spray of blood, gurgling like a baby. It was caution, claims Zach, that made him hack the man again – and adrenaline that made him do it again, and again, and again. It must have been around this time that Zach’s mind snapped. Or maybe it was the gunshots he heard from inside that did it. I can imagine him thinking, You’ve killed my friends, you bastards. And then: SNAP! No more thoughts, just the animal will to survive and the base emotions of fear, rage and revenge.

Zach is a paranoid and restless sleeper at the best of times, but the others only woke when that first gunshot hit my leg. When Marcel heard it, he went straight for the taser in the waistband of his jeans. He’d heard a couple of the guys moving around, so when a man with a knife peered into his room, he was waiting behind the door. He jammed the taser against the guy’s jugular and strangled the life out of him with the crook of his arm. Then he kicked the body under the bed and waited.

By this time Barry was already on his feet, and almost ran into a bunch of them coming up the stairs. But he managed to duck into Keith’s bedroom where the two of them watched from inside a wardrobe, waiting for an opportunity to attack as the intruders rifled through their bags. This is when the Rasta found the stash of weed that saved my life. He left, and when the other
